Born in 1914, The Chosun Hotel was designed by the architectural firm Goetheland, which built a brilliant four story northern European-style building with a Louis XVII living room, dining room, VIP reception room and concert hall, Luxurious silverware was imported from Germany, soft linen from Ireland, the crystal chandeliers and Otis elevators (then called vertical railroads) from New York.
The Chosun Hotel, being the one western hotel in Korea for many years, graciously welcomed international guests. President of the United States Herbert Hoover (1915) and Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito (1920) made the Chosun their home when they visited Seoul.
Korea celebrated Independence Day for the first time on August 15, 1945. Our staff personally thanked General MacArthur, General Hagi, Professor Seung-Man Rhee, and Professor Jae-Pil Seo for their successful contributions to achieving that precious goal. Moreover, the Chosun's luxurious grounds became Korea's home for the United Nations Command. Our first President, Syng-man Rhee and intellectual Professor Jae-pil Seo made our hotel their official residence, ushering in the Chosun's prominent role in National Politics.
The Chosun Hotel was able to weather the difficulties following WWII, including the Peninsular Conflict. Afterward, U.S. President Eisenhower stayed at the hotel and it remains the prestigious choice for many visiting dignitaries and for hosting important international conferences.
With Korea's economic growth and emergent new technologies, President Jung-hee Park decided to recreate the Chosun Hotel as the Nation's leading First Class International Luxury Hotel. When completed in 1970, President Park and the First lady attended the opening ceremony. The Chosun Hotel regained it's position of society's center stage of culture and politics, hosting the historic Pan-Korean North-South Red Cross Conferences and many VIP guests, including U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.
Renamed The Westin Chosun in 1981, a large-scale renovation and strong investment in guest amenities made our hotel a true World-class competitor. Years of continual investment and renovation in the hotel's restaurants, banquet rooms, and guest rooms guaranteed the highest level of quality.
Famous for having spacious and elegant guest rooms and facilities, The Westin Chosun Hotel now stands on the world stage of food and beverage, and is currently responsible for all COEX and KINTEX banquets, food and beverage operations. With its entrance into complimentary businesses since 1985, The Westin Chosun is striving to be the model for all hotels in the new century.
